1st Responder Livestock/Equine Handling Training

Last week UC Davis Firefighters participated in a livestock and equine handling course given by the UC Davis School of Vet Med in conjunction with the Dept. of Animal Science as part of a wider initiative to enhance campus preparedness for responding to and resolving unwanted and hazardous incidents involving animals.

Spending time with horses and other large animals in a training setting helps to build the comfort level and confidence of our firefighters when working with them during an emergency.

Learning how to operate a variety of tools and accessories used for horses is an important part of being able to effectively assist them in a disaster.

We were fortunate to have a world-class team from Vet Med and Animal Sciences to help us learn the ropes of working with horses.

UC Davis firefighters also learned how to evacuate cattle safely.
