Job Function:

Learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities to augment UC Davis Fire Department personnel in preparing for, responding to, and mitigating emergencies.

Job Description:
  • An initial recruit firefighter academy will take place June 29th through July 31st (Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm) covering basic Firefighter knowledge, skills and abilities taken from UC Davis Fire Department policies and guidelines and the IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting curriculum.
  • Compensation is provided during initial Firefighter Academy (12.50/hr.), but no additional monetary compensation is provided for working the required hours.
  • Those that complete training to become Student Firefighters are offered a contract arrangement for a private room in the Fire/Police building dormitory in exchange for working five shifts and participating in three training sessions per month, totaling 87 hours, commencing in September 2020.

Position Qualifications:
  • AHA First Aid, AHA BLS Healthcare Provider CPR, and EMT-B course completion with Yolo County EMS Agency (YEMSA) licensure are required to be offered full Student Firefighter classification status. 
  • Note: Those selected as Student Firefighter Recruits under this job posting who are not currently EMT certified, will be enrolled into the UC Davis Fire Department EMT certification class held from March 31st to June 26th, 2020 (Tuesday/Thursday 6pm to 10pm and Saturdays 8am to 5pm). All tuition, uniforms, and supplies for the EMT course will be paid for by the Fire Department for those selected including the AHA BLS Healthcare Provider CPR/First Aid prerequisite costs (if not already progressed). Time spent in the EMT class is non-paid.
  • Minimum 2-year commitment to the program required.
  • Physical Requirements: Lifting and moving heavy objects. Working in hot weather while wearing firefighter equipment. Academic and manipulative components to training.
  • Pre-Placement Medical Physical evaluation is required as a condition of employment.
